Days 7 - 10 at Lepo Lorun @alfonsahoreng: Making mordants in preparation for natural dyeing, foraging for local color (found some lovely mango skins), followed by weaving, weaving, and more weaving, until the completion of my Ikat weaving and my supplementary weft weaving!! It took many many hours until completion, and I am so grateful for the support and talent of the Lepo Lorun community for helping me keep the production going, including providing lots of strong kopi (aka coffee ;), continuous support, and lots of smiling & laughing together throughout the process.
These women not only worked with me, but unconditionally accepted me as their own-- with their nurturing spirit, maternal nature, guidance, providing a safe & welcoming space, and so much more. As someone who has lost my mother, I cannot express how significant this is for me. To be treated as one of their own so immediately and without question has been such a beautiful gift, and truly heart opening. I am forever grateful for this. ❤❤ #lepolorunikatflores #naturaldyes #sustainabletextiles
It was tuly an honor to be dressed as a tradional Sikka woman by the women of Lepo Lorun and Alfonsa Horeng Ikat Flores @alfonsahoreng, while working together on what we love ❤. #sustainabletextiles #naturaldyes #handweaving #lepolorunikatflores
Day 5 & 6 at Lepo Lorun with @alfonsahoreng: Weaving #1/ supplementary weft weaving in progress, as skeins of naturally dyed indigo are drying. We cut off all of the ikat binding from the warp (for Weaving #2) to reveal the resist pattern. Then, we carefully line up/ tie up the ikat warp as perfectly as possible to align the patterns, then apply a natural gum to the warp. When the gum is dry, I add my naturally dyed colors to complete my design, tie up the finished warp to the back strap loom, add the heddles, the reed, etc.. and weave.

Day 3 & 4 at Lepo Lorun @alfonsahoreng:
Harvesting & prepping local/ natural indigo for dyeing, then dyeing the warp after letting the Indigo set for a full day until fermentation. We additionally created a green dye by mixing curcumma & mango skin w/ indigo.
The results of our naturally dyed yarns turned out well, and to finish off the process to allow for strength and stretch, we seal the yarns with a 'gum' made from natural starch.
After the warp for the supplementary weft weaving is complete, we carefully work out the design & pattern, followed by setting up the loom, and beginning to weave :). #lepolorunikatflores #naturaldyes #sustainabletextiles
Day 1&2 at Lepo Lorun with @alfonsahoreng. Setting up/ binding the Ikat warp, setting up an additional warp for supplementary weft weaving, followed by dyeing the warp threads using natural dyes that we extracted from local plants-- mangrove, bixa orellana, caesalpina sappan linn, mango bark, curcumma (turmeric), morinder, and indigo. #lepolorunikatflores #naturaldyes #handweaving #sustainabletextiles
A walk through the streets of Ubud, as the community prepares for the Balinese Festival-- Galungan and Kuningan Day, visiting the shop/ meeting the dedicated staff of Threads of Life, and visiting a master paper artist who specializes in working w/ banana fiber, in his beautiful studio. @threadsoflifebali #galunganandkuningancelebration
3 long flights and layovers later, I have arrived in Bali. Worth every waiting minute and grateful beyond comprehension ❤
